ARGO theme park virtual really becomes a reality

In 2015, a promotional video of The Void VR theme park in the United States was circulated in the circle of Chinese VR enthusiasts: Several young men and women put on a device called “Rapture” and walked in a bland model. The world between them—the world in their eyes—is the ancient battlefield, the endless wilderness, the ruined wasteland world... and they themselves have also become Jedi Masters and Dragon Warriors.

Infected by this, Keiyi Technology founder Pan Bohang wanted to be a theme park like “The Void” from 2 years ago. After two years of brewing, Keyi Technology held a strategic conference in Beijing last month, “Before the age, all sense of the future”, and announced that it will be the first real VR theme in their minds at the Shijingshan Amusement Park. park. With deep curiosity, 87 Jun visited Keyi Science and experienced the legendary “VR theme park” in their K-Labs laboratory.

"Scared to death, the door opened!"

Wearing a VR helmet, a wooden door appeared in front of him. 87 Jun unconsciously reached out to twist the door handle, but thought about it, the door in VR should be fake. However, when he touched the doorknob, the 87-jun could hardly believe it, and the door was real! This was for the old VR driver who had been deceiving for many years in the VR world and had been deceived by a fake door that could not be seen or touched. Is the world view refreshed. Did the virtual reality become reality this time?

Entering the door is a dim and dark old room, furnished with classical vicissitudes of life. A brazier burns, and near it, he feels a wave of heat. Going further, it is a narrow and narrow road with several iron shelves. It is down to the bottom. Although the brain honestly told himself that this was false, but the legs were not so convinced that they couldn't walk away. They were scared to death...

Last year, The Void set off a wave of "VR theme parks", and many domestic startups claimed to do VR theme parks. Pang Bohang went to Utah to experience The Void very early. In his view, these so-called "theme parks" occupying hundreds of thousands of square meters in the market are far from The Void.

“Our pursuit is not just an increase in area. If we only put a few HTCs in a larger space or let the audience go in a larger space, it is just a bigger VR experience shop.”

Compared with the VR content experienced in the past, Keyi Technology's ARGO fundamentally subverted 87's intrinsic knowledge of the VR experience. In the previous experience, no matter how realistic the scene looked, the stone could not be touched, and the sofa could not. Sitting, the beauty of the beach can only be seen from afar... But in ARGO, you can touch the real torch, feel its heat, and touch the real door handle and wall.

When the reality touches and the virtual picture is blended, 87-Jun feels immersed in this scene like never before: Whether it's a spurt boardwalk or a 10,000 meter high, reason tells me that everything is false, but the reaction of the nerves and the brain , but let 87 Jun's calf belly are trembling ... ...

With some curiosity, 87 Jun decided to take down the VR head first, and Pan Bo Hang chat about their design and ideas for ARGO.

Two years of grinding a sword, past and present of K-Labs and ARGO

Pan Bohang, known as Lao Pan, is the initiator of the famous VR community VRplay in the circle. However, before the conference last month, 87 had little knowledge of Pang Bohang and K-Labs.

According to Pang Bohang's introduction, in 2013, he and the team founded K-Labs and officially registered the company in 2015. The core members of the team are mainly from universities such as Tsinghua University, Nankai University, Beijing Film Academy, and London University of the Arts. The research directions include human-computer interaction, human interaction, interaction between people and the environment, and some digital experience projects in museums and science museums.

In the spring of 2015, when the video of “the strongest surface entertainment facility” the Void video blew through the circle of friends, Pang Bohang was inspired and began to study the core technologies needed for the VR theme park. The team has been doing museum projects before, plus he likes VR, and quite research, after research, he clearly saw the VR theme park can be implemented, so by the end of 2015 began to invest in the development of VR theme park.

Rome was not built in a day. Before making such a heavy experience project as a VR theme park, Pang Bohang attempted the integration and interactive verification of large space multiplayer games in 2015, and in October of the same year passed an ancient tomb adventure game in trade circles and exhibitions across the country. Public beta gathering feedback. In 2016, it launched a light-filled space project. This is a lightweight multiplayer space VR interactive entertainment solution that supports 4 people in a 50-100 square meter space for collaborative games. In November 2016, Pan Bohang took the finished product to Happy Valley in Beijing for a month-long operation and more than 10,000 people experienced their project.

With the gradual maturity of ARGO's sense of space, K-Labs began planning for ARGO's full-scale theme parks at the end of 2016. “Now it seems that there has been a lot of accumulation in VR before, including cooperation with research projects of Tsinghua University, early cooperation with Noliton Laboratory, integration of full-featured space systems and interactive content research, development of head-display equipment, and research optics. The fusion algorithm of motion capture and IMU, VR experiment with ultrasonic positioning and laser positioning program, etc. are all preparing for this theme park.” Pan Bohang is confident that whether it is to do hardware, integration, content design or interactive experience, the team Both have good integration capabilities and independent development capabilities.

What K-Labs was doing also caught the attention of the capital. In August 2016, the company received an angel round of financing of $6 million from Infinity Venture Partners and Chenhui Ventures. Next, Pan Bohang hopes to find an employer who can see the long-term value of the program, and has channel and industry resource promotion programs to allow the theme park to flourish throughout the country in the next two or three years.

How VR theme parks stir the offline experience market

In 2015, the outbreak of an egg chair brought the VR line experience to its first spring. Although there are more and more VR devices and content, 2016 looks like a VR experience store on a tall scale, but it is crushed.

In Pang Bohang's view, there are two secret keys in ARGO's all-encompassing world to solve the pain points under the VR line -

The first is to strengthen the "light interaction" between people. Ordinary offline experience shop, often a person with a wired helmet "playing", the same friends often can only look at the side. ARGO uses a 6-8 person model so that couples, relatives or friends can play together. The relationship between them can be cooperation or competition. The participation of many people also meets the social needs of people's offline entertainment.

The second is on the site. Most of the current VR offline experience stores are limited to shopping malls, but Pang Bohang does not like this form. Most of the tourists in the mall are residents within 3-5 kilometers of the neighborhood. The heavy VR experience is not just for the tourists in the mall. They often experience it once and they will not experience it for the second time. The reacquisition rate is low.

Pan Bohang chose to build the first VR theme park in the amusement park because the purpose of the visitors was different: “We went to the playground to seek weightlessness and excitement, and to play for fun, so heavy experience is more in line with them. "Psychological expectations." The playground covers a wider range of people and the flow of people is greater.

“For the park, they also very much hope to introduce the VR project,” Pang Bohang believes that the combination of VR and amusement park can be said to be a natural match. “On the one hand, after decades of development, amusement parks also need some new technology to upgrade the original recreational facilities; on the other hand, for the investment of tens of millions of amusement park facilities, the investment in ARGO theme parks And the maintenance cost is relatively low, and the return time is shorter. The park is naturally more welcome."

Deeply participate in the operation of the stadium, and this is a successful project in 3 years.

Speaking of the VR theme park that will begin operation at the end of the year, Pan Bohang’s remarks are somewhat contrary to 87-jun's expectations. They not only provide design and technical solutions for the venues, but will also be deeply involved in the later operation of the venues.

Providers of offline VR solutions have always "talked about the change of colors" in participating in offline operations. At present, the operation of the VR experience store is very complicated, and the revenue has high uncertainty: the input of the operator, the depreciation rate of the equipment, and the content update are all problems. The heavy asset operating model is also challenging for smaller VR startups.

In this regard, Pan Bohang said that on the one hand, they need to get more data iteration products by participating in the operation of the first project. On the other hand, they conducted an assessment and were very confident about recovering costs:

“Our calculations have taken into account the annual passenger flow of the amusement park, the theme park’s core experience and the reception capacity of all consumer projects in the region. The cost can be recovered within 3 years. Among the many amusement park facilities, 3 Recalling this year means that the prospects for the project are excellent."

In addition, Pan Bohang stated that many benefits built in the playground are unmatched by ordinary shopping malls: “The VR theme park is more like a garden park, and similar projects on the side will drain each other, and tourists will also have group effects. The surrounding sales , Food store revenue, these will further increase the project's revenue."

"In the future, ARGO theme parks will also be modularized. By then, various custom theme parks will be blooming everywhere in various amusement parks and scenic spots." Pan Bohang said that the team will modularize some hardware and facilities for development next year. It is applied directly and is similar to Lego's project that can be stitched and transferred quickly. In this way, the developer's copying and customization costs will be reduced, and the execution and display efficiency will be greatly improved. From this, combined with some IP, you can easily create a unique personalized theme park.

A joyous and full of chatter was over. 87 Jun gave Lao Pan a wink. In seconds, he quietly pulled out the VR headset and allowed 87 to go to his “ARGO Theme Park”. ......
