The smart projection market has another spoiler? Why does the Lynx come from?
Over the past few years, the integration of micro-projectors into intelligent systems has led to a surge in popularity, thanks to their compact design, portability, sleek looks, and the ability to display large images. These features have made them a favorite among tech-savvy users, prompting some smart home appliance companies to incorporate them into their product lines. As smart projection gains traction, it's becoming a promising avenue for smart hardware innovation.
Recently, the audio-visual community learned that Tmall is set to make a significant move into the smart projector market. Two models, the Tmall Magic Screen A1C and A1, which are essentially smart mini projectors, are reportedly in the pipeline. This news has sparked speculation about whether Tmall is shifting its focus away from traditional boxes toward the burgeoning smart projection sector.
The concept of smart projection has been around for a while, particularly with the advent of non-screen TVs a few years ago. This "new concept" revitalized the micro-projector industry, pushing it into the intelligent age. Innovations like laser TVs, smart home projectors, and business projectors have opened doors for numerous companies to explore the potential of smart projectors.
Smart mini projectors, with their compact size, stylish design, large screen capabilities, and cost-effectiveness, have become increasingly appealing to consumers. They offer the convenience of enjoying cinematic experiences at home without the bulk of traditional setups. Data shows that sales of these devices have been robust, reflecting their growing popularity.
Unlike traditional projector sales, which are predominantly offline, smart mini projectors rely heavily on online platforms. As one of China's leading e-commerce platforms, Tmall naturally has access to extensive data on smart projector sales. This allows them to track consumer trends and predict future growth patterns.
Interestingly, Tmall’s Lynx box was recently removed from major e-commerce sites, reportedly due to supply chain issues. The company has assured that this is only temporary, and restocking is underway. Meanwhile, the certification of a new Tmall Magic Screen product at the National 3C Quality Certification Center has fueled further speculation about their entry into the smart projection market.
A search on Tmall's webpage revealed a product called the Big Eye Orange V1 smart projector, described as a Tmall-customized magic screen. Priced at 2599 yuan, it offers a competitive price point compared to similar offerings. However, the A1C model seems to still be in the works, as it hasn't appeared on the shelves yet. Industry insiders believe it won't be long before Tmall fully enters the smart micro-projection market.
What’s intriguing is that the applicant for these products has shifted from Zhejiang Tmall Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd. to Shenzhen Orange Electronics Co., Ltd. According to inquiries, Orange Electronics began collaborating with Alibaba’s intelligent terminal hardware team in early 2017. Leveraging TI's patented DLP technology and working with Harman, a renowned audio manufacturer, they've developed several home-use intelligent audio projectors.
Orange Electronics’ strategy emphasizes continuous innovation and product development. Their future plans include ventures into laser screenless TVs, interactive AI projections, and interactive robotic projections. The company also aims to enhance its research into projector core components and establish high-standard dust-free production facilities to become a top-tier R&D manufacturer in the projector industry.
This indicates that Tmall’s move into smart projectors isn’t just a fleeting trend but part of a long-term strategic plan. However, questions have arisen regarding potential design similarities between Tmall's products and existing projector models, raising concerns about possible plagiarism.
As the smart projector market becomes more crowded, competition among new entrants is inevitable. Tmall’s involvement could bring much-needed momentum to the niche projector market, making it more accessible to consumers who want to experience cinematic effects at home. Whether the T-monster Magic Screen will disrupt the market or simply blend in remains to be seen.
