Theologians: Sex robot users have angered God and will go to hell

On September 24, NetEase Smart News reported that some Christian theologians have raised serious concerns about the rise of sex robots, calling them a product of "distorted" human nature. According to these religious leaders, those who use such devices may face eternal punishment in hell.

As artificial intelligence and robotics continue to advance, the demand for hyper-realistic, AI-powered sex robots is growing rapidly. These advanced humanoid machines are capable of speech, can evolve personalities, and offer a wide range of sexual interactions. One example is Samantha, a robot that "likes to be touched" and features eight different modes, including "romantic" and "family mode." These products are now being sold globally, and even the sex industry is adapting, with some brothels replacing human workers with robotic alternatives.

However, when questioned by foreign media, several leading Christian theologians criticized the development and use of sex robots. Dr. Richard Lander, Dean of the Southern Evangelical Theological Seminary in North Carolina, warned that non-human sexuality is a direct challenge to God’s design. He argued that the widespread use of sex robots could lead to "disastrous" consequences for human relationships, and that any sexual act outside of God's intended purpose is considered the worst sin.

"The Bible clearly states that God created sex for the union of two people," Lander said. "Any form of sexual activity that deviates from this divine purpose is an act of rebellion. This includes non-human sexuality, which is similar to bestiality—a clear violation of God’s will."

Dr. Christopher Benek, a religious commentator and pastor in South Florida, echoed similar concerns. He suggested that engaging in sexual acts with robots could lead individuals away from God and into eternal separation. In traditional Christianity, idolatry—worshipping images or statues—is seen as a grave sin. Therefore, he argues that using a robot for sexual purposes is essentially worshipping a non-human idol, which is also considered a crime under Christian doctrine.

In an interview, Benek stated: "From a Christian perspective, having a sexual relationship with a robot means separating from God. It distances us from Him and gradually erodes our humanity. We should pause and reflect carefully. As C.S. Lewis once said, 'The door to hell is locked from the inside.'"

A recent report by the Foundation of Responsible Robotics has raised alarms over the potential for increased criminal behavior linked to the development of erotic robots. Some controversial arguments suggest that child-like sex robots might be used to treat pedophiles, but Dennis Hollinger, a professor of Christian ethics at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, strongly opposes this idea. He warns that such technology could worsen the exploitation of children rather than help prevent it. "Using child robots as a treatment for pedophilia may only encourage further abuse," he said. "Such devices must be banned by law."

When asked whether sex robots could one day become sentient, Dr. Rand emphasized that while they may mimic human behavior, they lack a soul. "Robots can only imitate human conditions, but they will never possess a soul or spirit," he explained. "They are designed to respond to humans and reinforce self-centered tendencies. This is not healthy—it's a distorted, counterfeit version of humanity."

Dr. Jordi Vallverdú, a computer philosopher and scientist, noted that religious opposition to sex robots is expected. In an interview, he said: "Religions often have strict rules about sex, viewing it as both a sacred and potentially dangerous act. When new technologies like robotics challenge traditional views, religions tend to feel uneasy and express their disapproval."

When asked if an AI robot could ever join a church, Dr. Rand gave a firm "no," stating, "They are not humans. Only God creates people." However, Dr. Benek took a more open stance, saying, "I welcome all who seek Christ’s redemption with open arms."
