Intel's acquisition of German enterprise MAVinci will achieve "machine vision dream"?

On November 2, according to foreign media reports, Intel acquired the German commercial drone software startup MAVinci. As soon as this news came out, the industry said that they did not understand: As the world's largest chip maker, Intel's acquisition of drone software developers seems strange.

In 2015, chip maker Qualcomm released a short film to show that its chips will allow the drone to navigate automatically, and said it wants to enter the drone market. After that, Intel also entered the drone market with great ambitions, investing or acquiring drone companies three times, and drastically tightening the layout.

Three investment acquisitions of drone companies

For the first time: Intel invested in China's UAV manufacturing company Yuneec.

70% of the global consumer drone market is in Dajiang, so China's consumer-grade UAV companies are leading the world in consumer-grade UAV production and are gradually becoming world-class innovation leaders for consumer drones. In August 2015, Intel took the opportunity to invest in US UAV manufacturing company YUNEEC for US$60 million. According to the data, Yuneec's main business is to manufacture drone equipment for the consumer and industrial markets. At the same time, Yuneec is also the biggest competitor of Dajiang in the Chinese market.

At the CES2016 exhibition held in January 2016, Intel CEOBrian Krzanich personally introduced the "Six-rotor UAV YUNEEC Typhoon H" jointly produced with Yuneec. This drone is equipped with Intel's RealSenseTech (real-time sensing technology) to collect environmental data through sensors such as cameras and ultrasound, and then processed by the CPU in real time, so that it can sense the surrounding environment and make its own judgment.

Second time: Intel acquired AscendingTechnologies.

In January 2016, Intel acquired AscendingTechnologies, a German drone manufacturer specializing in autonomous detection and obstacle avoidance AI technology. According to the data, AscendingTechnologies is a company in Krailling, Germany, with a total of 75 employees, mainly researching drones. The company's aircraft use Intel's RealSense3-D camera to automatically detect and avoid obstacles.

The third time is the acquisition of MAVinci.

MAVinci is an entrepreneurial commercial drone software company based in St.Leon-Rot, Germany, with a total of 20 employees. After the acquisition, Intel acquired flight planning software and fixed-wing UAV design technology, and MAVinci will become part of its new technology group, headed by Intel's drone business director Anil Randall.

According to Anil Randuri, the acquisition is aimed at commercial drones, and their focus is on the precise load of drones in construction and safety inspections. MAVinci has state-of-the-art task planning software that maps geographic figures and can quickly create tasks for specific tasks. MAVinci will work with AscendingTechnologies to expand its business for Intel, looking for commercial customers in the agriculture, insurance, construction and mining industries.
