On November 29th, the "Intel China Research Institute Open Day" took place in Beijing. The event featured a keynote speech by Song Jiqiang, President of Intel China Research Institute, who provided insights into the institute's ongoing research and showcased cutting-edge developments in artificial intelligence, robotics, 5G, and virtual reality. Additionally, Intel announced the launch of a new partner program centered around its Heterogeneous Extensible Robot Open Platform (HERO). The HERO platform is an advanced system solution designed for intelligent robots, including service robots, medical robots, and autonomous vehicles. It combines low power consumption with high performance and compact design. The platform integrates Intel Core™ processors as the central control unit, working alongside FPGAs and other specialized accelerators like Movidius’ VPUs to deliver efficient computing power. By combining CPU and FPGA technologies, the HERO system can process large volumes of data in real time and run multiple AI algorithms simultaneously. This heterogeneous architecture allows for both temporal and spatial computation models—CPUs handle sequential processing for flexible control, while accelerators perform parallel computations to speed up complex tasks. Based on the HERO platform, Intel has developed several robotic applications using FPGA acceleration: During the event, Intel China researchers also introduced a new partner program focused on the HERO platform. They emphasized that through collaboration with industry partners at the platform, application, and ecosystem levels, the initiative aims to create a comprehensive, efficient, and open platform. By combining R&D efforts, academic innovation, and industrial demonstrations, the program seeks to accelerate the practical implementation of emerging technologies and products.
