Lighting design at the Viamala Raststätte service station in Switzerland

Iseppi-Kurath won the design competition for the highway service station, which is the window of the region. Close to the north exit of the A13 road in Thusis-Nord, Graubünden, Switzerland, the service area has an exaggerated and expressive roof "a prelude to the building and a collection of entrances and exits." The layout of the building is almost spiral To enable customers to get in touch with restaurants, bar areas, store takeaways, and travel information while walking, which can be reached directly from the outside. The flat also offers a quieter area for conference and restaurant service.

The windows face the vast canyons (Viamala and Muttnerhöhe, the Schin Canyon) and the Domleschg Valley. The wood interior adds to the “warm, comfortable and intimate feel of the service area”. The main load-bearing material on the structure is wood, which is aided by concrete slabs. The interior is dominated by wood and the exterior facade is metal. The outer surface of the weather-proof building metal requires only a small amount of maintenance. The design and material selection is based on the surrounding landscape and uses the technology of the car.

The roof is a one-meter-wide folding surface with plywood and tweezers on the beams. The timber frame structure of the wall is prefabricated and installed on site.
