Mercury selenide for new applications in place of mercury in high pressure discharge lamps

Abstract: The present invention provides a new use of a non-toxic and stable chemical substance selenized mercury for replacing mercury in a high-pressure discharge lamp, which replaces liquid mercury with mercury selenide made of a compound of mercury and selenium. The weight ratio of mercury to selenium in mercury is equal to the ratio of the molecular weights of the two elements. The amount is to retain 0-50% of the liquid mercury in the high-pressure discharge lamp, and the remaining mercury is replaced by the corresponding molecular weight of mercury selenide. Metal halides, metals and other chemical components can also be added to the mercury selenide. The invention can greatly reduce the use of liquid mercury in high-intensity discharge lamps, and since HgSe is a stable substance, even if the lamp tube is broken, no liquid mercury or mercury vapor leaks, so that mercury pollution can be greatly reduced.
