QLED VS OLED in the TV market
The battle between OLED and QLED has reached a boiling point, with both technologies vying for dominance in the future of television display. This ongoing rivalry has drawn the attention of numerous TV manufacturers, each trying to position itself as the leader in next-generation screen technology.
As the demand for higher quality TV experiences grows, so does the competition between these two technologies. The debate over which is superior—OLED or QLED—has become a hot topic within the industry, with companies on both sides launching aggressive marketing campaigns to sway consumer opinions.
For over four years, traditional TV brands have managed to hold their ground, while some internet-based TV brands have faced challenges during periods of rising panel prices. Beyond just sales, the war over display technology has become a major spectacle in the color TV market, with the OLED and QLED camps clashing regularly.
On one side, companies like LG and Skyworth continue to push forward with OLED technology, helping bring OLED TVs to market quickly. In 2016, only five global manufacturers produced OLED TVs. By 2017, that number had risen to 13, including several Chinese companies. On the other hand, Samsung and TCL are promoting quantum dot (QLED) technology. According to NPD DisplaySearch, the growth rate of QLED TVs in China is expected to reach 100%, with shipments increasing from 600,000 units in 2016 to 1.2 million in 2017.
Fan Zhijun, general manager of Suning Shanghai, noted that throughout the history of the TV industry, technological debates have always been common. At every stage of development, there have been disagreements about which technologies to adopt. For example, early on, the industry debated whether to use rear projection or large-screen technology, ultimately leading to the decline of rear projection. As LCDs improved, plasma TVs were eventually phased out. Now, in the "post-LCD era," the industry is once again facing a new debate: should it choose OLED or QLED to replace LCD screens?
Samsung recently launched a new marketing campaign targeting OLED, claiming that it's not suitable for TV panels due to issues like screen burn-in. Instead, they're pushing their own QLED technology. Samsung argues that OLED panels suffer from screen burn-in because they use organic materials, which degrade over time. In contrast, QLED uses semiconductor nanocrystals, offering better durability and longer lifespan, making them more suitable for TVs.
OLED TVs also face challenges such as limited supply and high prices. Ross Young of DSCC predicted that QLED could become the mainstream choice due to OLED’s inability to meet demand and its high cost. However, LG did not directly respond to Samsung’s claims but emphasized that OLED TVs ranked first in consumer preference across 11 countries, showing strong market appeal.
So what exactly is quantum dot technology? QLEDs use artificial nanocrystals with semiconducting properties to enhance brightness and color performance on LCD screens. These quantum dots emit light when struck by photons, with the color emitted depending on the size of the dots. Larger dots produce red light, smaller ones green, and intermediate sizes produce blue. When combined with a blue LED backlight, this allows for full-color displays with enhanced brightness and color accuracy.
While the OLED camp highlights self-emission, thinness, and flexibility, the QLED camp emphasizes color purity and accuracy. However, critics argue that current QLED TVs are still based on photoluminescence rather than true self-luminescence, placing them at a disadvantage compared to OLEDs.
Whether OLED or QLED will win the future of TV display remains uncertain, but ultimately, it will be up to consumers to decide. As the competition heats up, the next few years will likely see even more innovation and debate in the world of television technology.
