Automotive Electromagnetic Compatibility Test Standard

Automotive electronics EMC testing is receiving more and more attention. The three most important criteria are CISPR 25, ISO11452-2, and ISO11452-4. This article gives the test equipment, its role and recommended solutions, is a must-have manual for automotive electronics engineers.

First, CISPR25 standard

CISPR25 currently uses the third edition of the 2007 standard, which is quite different from the old version of 2002.

1, CISPR25 conducted disturbance test equipment

There are two types of CISPR25 conducted disturbance test methods. One is the voltage method: the voltage measurement can only be used for the conduction and emission characteristics of a single wire, so it is often used to measure the emission of the power line, using the artificial power network as the spacer; the other is the current probe method: the measurement control / signal line emission.

2, CISPR25 radiation disturbance test method

1) The anechoic chamber (ALSE) method: Radiation field strength measurements should be made within the ALSE to eliminate the effects of additional electromagnetic disturbances from electrical equipment and broadcast stations.

2) TEM cell method: Measurement of the intensity of the radiation field should be performed in the shielded room to eliminate additional interference from electrical equipment and broadcast stations. The TEM cell works like a shielded room.

3) Stripline method: The strip line is an open-type waveguide composed of a ground plane and a main conductor (separator) with characteristic impedance. The characteristic impedance values typically used are 50 Ω and 90 Ω.

The current common methods for measuring radiated disturbances of components/modules are: ALSE method, TEM cell method, and strip line method. However, due to the electromagnetic environment and site restrictions, the TEM cell is still in the research and practice. Therefore, the ALSE method is basically used to measure the radiation disturbance of automotive electronics.

Second, the ISO11452-2 standard

ISO11452 introduces a variety of different test methods for anti-harassment testing of automotive electronics. So we will introduce the two most commonly used test methods. They are the anechoic chamber method (ISO11452-2) and the large current injection method (ISO11452-4).

Radiation anti-interference test method:

Calibration method: The standard current value calibrated by the calibration fixture is used. After the system records the transmission power, the sample is placed on the test to start the test. The injection power during the test is constant, but the generated current may change.

Closed-loop method: no need to calibrate, direct test, the system changes the output power in real time according to the data of the monitoring clamp, and tries to stabilize the current in the test required value.

Note: The results produced by these two methods are likely to be quite different. The effect is related to the impedance characteristics of the product itself. The closed-loop method is not common, but basically it is tested by the calibration method.

Third, ISO11452-4 Part 4: High current injection method, Bulk currenTInjecTIon (BCI)

Road vehicles - Electromagnetic interference with electromagnetic energy emitted by narrow bands. Component Test Method - Part 4, the purpose of this test is to verify the device's immunity to electromagnetic fields in the [1MHz–400MHz] band.
