The LG OLED desk lamp is finally in mass production! Illumination life exceeds 30,000 hours

The OLED panels developed by LG Display are renowned for their exceptional quality, as seen in LG's OLED TVs and the recently launched V30 smartphone. However, LG’s use of OLED technology extends beyond traditional electronics. Recently, they showcased a new application—using OLED panels as light sources, marking an innovative step in lighting design.

This isn’t the first time LG has explored OLED-based lighting. In 2014, LG Electronics introduced similar concepts at industry events. Now, LG Display has taken it from concept to reality, showcasing real-world applications of this cutting-edge technology. Over the past three years, significant advancements have been made in the development of these OLED table lamps. Initially, they were produced using a second-generation manufacturing process, but LG Display now utilizes a more advanced fifth-generation production line, resulting in improved efficiency and performance. The new OLED desk lamp features an ultra-thin, flexible light-emitting panel covered with plastic, making it highly adaptable. LG Display has developed three different panel shapes—square and two oval variants of varying lengths—offering a range of design options. Compared to the 2014 version, the current model boasts higher power output and a significantly longer lifespan. At the recent DesignJunction exhibition in London, LG Display displayed three prototypes. One of the elliptical models is said to last between 30,000 to 70,000 hours, which equates to about 13 years of daily use if left on for 10 hours each day. Like standard LED lights, LG’s OLED desk lamps support adjustable color temperature, allowing users to customize the lighting based on their environment, time of day, or specific needs. The flexibility of the panels also opens up new possibilities for product design. Beyond home use, LG Display is currently collaborating with automotive manufacturers to integrate their lighting technology into vehicles. It's worth noting that LG Display does not sell these lamps directly. While a commercial version is already available, the latest fifth-generation OLED table lamp will only be fully operational early next year.
