The world's first 360° commercial solid-state LiDAR system
AEye has achieved a major breakthrough by detecting a high-density point cloud image from a single frame of its 150-channel intelligent LiDAR, capturing data up to 300 meters away with a full 360° coverage. According to Memes Consulting, AEye, a pioneer in machine vision, recently showcased its first commercial solid-state LiDAR system with a 360° detection range during a live urban demonstration. This advanced LiDAR system features a densely packed 150 vertical channel scanner that enables custom scanning of specific areas and offers an extended detection range of 300 meters. As the world's first commercial solid-state LiDAR to support full 360° sensing and real-time software configuration, it provides a compact, high-performance, and cost-effective solution for autonomous vehicles, marking a significant milestone in the development of safe and reliable self-driving technology.
"This is a major leap forward in the next generation of vision systems," said Luis Dussan, founder and CEO of AEye. "Our solid-state LiDAR combines cutting-edge technology to achieve detection distances, frame rates, and resolutions that were previously unattainable." The system leverages smart sensing and software-defined LiDAR (SDL) to enhance perception capabilities for autonomous vehicles, helping OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and transportation service providers tackle some of their most challenging perception tasks.
AEye’s architecture mimics the human visual cortex, preprocessing and transmitting relevant information efficiently. It integrates computer vision with a 1550nm LiDAR system for intelligent data detection, fast sensing, and action planning. Its software-defined hardware allows real-time data selection and optimized processing, reducing control loop latency. With its unique "visual cortex" design, the system processes LiDAR data more quickly and efficiently, improving reliability while lowering power consumption and bandwidth usage—key factors in achieving high-resolution, low-latency sensing solutions.
Additionally, AEye’s MEMS-based design supports rapid development and customization, making it easier to scale production and reduce costs. The company is currently testing its systems with major transportation and industrial OEMs, collaborating with shipping service providers and supply chain partners. AEye plans to roll out phased commercial launches between 2017 and 2018.
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, AEye has been at the forefront of smart sensing technology since launching its first solid-state LiDAR in 2013. In June 2017, it secured $16 million in Series A funding, backed by top-tier investors such as Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Intel Capital, and Airbus Ventures. AEye continues to push the boundaries of autonomous vehicle perception, aiming to provide the eyes and visual cortex for the future of mobility.
