Hydrogen fuel cells will coexist in the future with lithium batteries
On October 20, a high-level delegation led by Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang, along with officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology, visited Yihuatong Technology Co., Ltd. for an inspection. The group included Ma Lianfang, Director of the General Office, Qin Yong, Director of the Department of High-tech Development and Industrialization, and Zhang Zhihong, Director of the Torch Center. Their visit highlighted growing interest in hydrogen fuel cell technology in China.
Yihuatong’s core products include hydrogen fuel cell engines and their associated controllers. Its third-generation hydrogen fuel cell engine is capable of starting at -30°C, maintaining cold storage up to 46°C, and automatically shutting down when necessary. This technology is now being used in Beiqi Futian Auhui series hydrogen fuel cell buses, showcasing its practical application in public transportation.
While electric vehicles have dominated global automotive trends, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have not been left behind. Industry leaders such as Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, and General Motors continue to invest heavily in fuel cell technology, indicating strong long-term confidence in the sector. Compared to lithium batteries, hydrogen fuel cells offer advantages like higher safety, longer range, faster refueling, zero emissions, and no secondary pollution from waste batteries.
The hydrogen fuel cell market has seen increasing activity in recent years, with supportive policies emerging regularly. Industry experts predict that China’s hydrogen energy industry could enter a period of rapid growth within the next three to five years, possibly around 2020. In 2023, six fuel cell vehicles were added to the list of new energy models exempt from purchase tax. Additionally, a national standards drafting meeting was held to help remove barriers for market development.
At a recent investment promotion conference in Foshan’s Nanhai District, Wulong Electric Vehicles announced an investment of over RMB 10 billion into a hydrogen power R&D center and vehicle production project. Meanwhile, Foton Motor launched its first commercially available hydrogen fuel bus, and the country’s first fully commercialized hydrogen refueling station became operational.
Despite these advancements, China’s hydrogen fuel cell technology still lags behind international competitors, and the industry remains in its early stages. However, with continued policy support and growing market demand, companies like Yutong, Beiqi Foton, and Nanjing Jinlong are accelerating their efforts to expand into the hydrogen fuel market.
Experts suggest that China’s approach to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles focuses on commercial applications like buses rather than private cars, due to the higher energy density and reliability requirements of passenger vehicles. Infrastructure challenges also play a role—hydrogen refueling stations are easier to build for fixed-route buses but more complex for widely dispersed private vehicles.
Although China’s hydrogen fuel passenger vehicles are not yet fully market-ready, the technology is advancing rapidly. Toyota’s decision to open up 5,680 hydrogen-related patents has provided a solid foundation for China’s own hydrogen fuel vehicle ecosystem.
Recent improvements have significantly reduced the cost of Beiqi Futian Auhui’s latest hydrogen fuel cell bus, from over 8 million yuan to just over 1 million. With government subsidies, the final cost for customers is in the tens of millions, and refueling takes only 5–10 minutes, providing a range of 400–500 km per fill.
At the 19th China Association of Science and Technology annual meeting in Changchun, Minister Wan Gang emphasized that hydrogen energy and electricity will coexist and complement each other in the future, supporting the growth of the new energy automotive industry. He called for stronger collaboration and accelerated development of hydrogen fuel cell technology to fully realize its potential.
