The latest report issued by European-based foreign investors: iPhone 3D VCSEL order market share decreased

European-based foreign investors recently released a report on Wen Mao (3105), highlighting a significant shift in the market dynamics of 3D VCSEL orders for iPhones. The report indicates that the company's market share in iPhone 3D VCSEL orders is expected to decline from 85% in 2017 to just 45% by 2019. This drop is attributed to Apple's evolving design strategies, which may see Finisar stepping in as a key supplier for the back-end 3D VCSEL systems. As a result, the impact on Wen Mao’s operational stability has lessened, prompting European investors to downgrade their rating from "neutral" to "inferior to the market." The target price for Wen Mao was also adjusted downward, from 270 yuan to 205 yuan. This negative outlook had an immediate effect on Wen Mao's stock price. On the day of the report, the shares opened with volatility and fell over 5.7% by midday, reaching 253.5 yuan. Analysts noted that while the front-end 3D sensing system will still be used in the second half of 2018, the new iPhone models in 2019 are expected to incorporate rear 3D camera sensing technology. This change in design is seen as a major factor behind the projected drop in market share. Despite this, there are potential growth opportunities in the Android market. More smartphone manufacturers are adopting similar 3D sensing technologies, which could position Wen Mao for rapid expansion. However, increased competition from integrated component manufacturers is also expected, which may challenge Wen Mao's market position. Additionally, the higher usable area of epitaxial wafers is expected to reduce wafer processing demands. According to channel surveys, only 40-50% of VCSEL epitaxial wafers currently meet Apple's standards, leading to higher processing needs. However, as production yields and uniformity improve, this demand may decrease, indirectly affecting the long-term growth of related industries. In response to these challenges, European investors have revised their earnings forecasts for Wen Mao. They reduced their 2018 and 2019 earnings per share estimates by 7 to 11%. The updated forecast suggests that Wen Mao’s 2018 earnings per share will be approximately 12.4 yuan, while 2019 earnings are expected to fall to 15 yuan. This adjustment reflects growing concerns about the company's future performance in the VCSEL sector.
