Amers Semiconductor Introduces NFC Smart Sensor IC

Ams AG has introduced a groundbreaking NFC sensor tag and data logger IC, the AS39513, designed for use in smart tags to enhance the storage and transportation of food, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare products. This innovative device offers efficient and accurate real-time monitoring throughout the supply chain. The AS39513 is a fully integrated digital sensor with an NFC front end, making it easy to embed into smart labels. Authorized NFC readers—such as smartphones or tablets—can access the unique ID stored internally, along with temperature and other critical data. This enables seamless tracking and verification of product conditions during transit. Smart labels based on the AS39513 empower manufacturers, transporters, and retailers to capture detailed status updates for individual packages. This ensures that perishable goods, like fresh produce or medicines, remain intact and meet quality standards upon arrival. The chip provides a comprehensive solution for temperature monitoring and NFC connectivity, featuring an NFC front end, a built-in temperature sensor, and analog interfaces for external sensors. Additional on-chip features include a real-time clock, 10-bit ADC, configurable data logging engine, 9kbit password-protected EEPROM, and an SPI interface for connection to an external microcontroller. The AS39513 is available in a bump die or chip-scale package, measuring just 0.3mm in thickness. Powered by a single-cell (1.5V) or dual-battery (3V) system, the AS39513 can store up to 1,020 time-stamped sensor readings. It complies with ISO15693 and NFC-V (T5T) standards, allowing NFC-enabled phones to read it within a few centimeters. With a dedicated ISO15693 reader, the range extends to 1–2 meters, enabling simultaneous reading of multiple tags in refrigerators or cabinets. This new IC replaces the Amers Semiconductor SL13A, offering improved temperature sensor performance with ±0.5°C accuracy between -20°C and 10°C, and ±1°C accuracy over the extended range from -55°C to 100°C. The AS39513 integrates a temperature sensor, making it ideal for cold chain monitoring in food, pharmaceuticals, and health products. It also includes the ams Cools Log double-click engine, which allows full control over logging mode and timing. Temperature measurements can be triggered periodically, when thresholds are exceeded, or by an external device. The Cool-Log engine is one of the key innovations of the AS39513, offering operational flexibility and low power consumption without the need for a microprocessor. In standby mode, it consumes only 2μA, and with a 30mAh battery, it can record more than a year’s worth of temperature data. This efficiency supports smaller, more cost-effective batteries, opening new possibilities for disposable, eco-friendly smart labels. Operating in passive mode, the AS39513 draws energy from the reader’s RF field, providing up to 4mA (1.8V) of current to external circuits. Giancarlo Cutrignelli, Head of Marketing for Ams’ Wireless Sensor Business, said: “The AS39513 is a fully integrated smart wireless sensor that allows manufacturers, carriers, and retailers to verify that medicines, food, and other items are properly stored and transported. It gives supply chain companies detailed records of temperature and other conditions within a single package, helping them make informed decisions.” “Additionally, the use of modern RFID assembly processes and printed batteries helps customers reduce production costs while meeting strict environmental regulations like RoHS, REACH, and EU Directive 2006/66/EC. This makes smart sensor tags truly disposable and environmentally friendly,” he added.
