Car networking market performance and analysis Tesla leads OTA forward

In the rapidly evolving field of new energy vehicles, the car networking market is expanding at an impressive pace. As we look ahead to its development stage and current status, it's clear that OTA (Over-The-Air) technology is gaining significant traction. Tesla has been a pioneer in this area, setting a strong example for the industry, while traditional automakers are now accelerating their own efforts to catch up.

With the continuous advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, the concept of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has emerged as one of the most promising sectors within the broader IoT ecosystem. It holds immense industrial potential and market demand, driving the integration and upgrading of automotive, transportation, information, and communication industries. This transformation is reshaping value chains and creating new opportunities across the entire automotive landscape. Currently, the IoV is in a crucial phase of development, with intelligent connected vehicles being included in China’s “Made in China 2025” strategy as one of the key driving forces for future growth.

The concept of car networking is based on the Internet of Things, integrating in-vehicle networks (in-vehicle LAN), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, and vehicle-to-internet (V2I) connectivity. Through standardized communication protocols and data exchange, it creates a wireless network system that enables real-time information sharing between vehicles, roads, pedestrians, and the internet. This ultimately supports functions such as intelligent transportation, smart cars, and autonomous driving.

In China, car networking is currently primarily enabled through cellular communication technologies like 2G, 3G, and 4G, with V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) still in early stages and not yet commercialized. According to data from the CITIC Research Office, as of August 2017, a total of 683 vehicle-connected terminals had received network access licenses from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The number of 4G-enabled vehicle terminals increased by 101 in 2016, showing a steady growth rate.

At present, car networking services in China are still in their early stages. They rely on cellular communication to connect vehicles to the internet, enabling internal and external information flow. This phase is focused on building data infrastructure and scaling up, which will eventually lead to enhanced service capabilities over time.

The development of the car networking industry is expected to cover the entire lifecycle of a vehicle. As lifestyles change, user scenarios will evolve, prompting continuous improvements and updates to car networking features. With the progress of automotive intelligence and network integration, vehicle networking functions have become more comprehensive, particularly in usage and maintenance phases. Both front-end and back-end systems are becoming stronger, supporting a more connected and intelligent driving experience.
