The function of the "bovine temper" inductor and inductor

What's the current facing? What do you mean?

Haha, this is the "stubborn" nature of an inductor. It's this stubbornness that makes it hard to place anywhere without careful consideration!

Let's start by understanding what an inductor really is. The actual construction of an inductor is quite simple. Just take a piece of insulated wire, like enameled wire, and wind it into a coil, and you've got an inductor! If you use magnetic cores to wrap the wire around, it becomes a magnetic bead, commonly found in MPN circuits:

In circuit diagrams, inductors are usually represented by the letter L. Just like resistors are R and capacitors are C, you can identify which component is labeled with an L next to it. The symbol looks like this:

When expressing inductance, keep in mind that the symbol is different from resistance. This one represents resistance, so don't confuse it with an inductor!

Inductors don’t have positive or negative poles. You don’t need to worry about which side connects to the positive or negative. In some cases, they may have a specific winding direction, but for most applications, it doesn’t matter. The unit of inductance is Henry (H), with smaller units like millihenry (mH) and microhenry (μH). These units convert in thousands.

So, what’s the “temper” of an inductor?

Why do we say it resists current? Well, when current flows through an inductor, it generates a voltage that opposes the direction of the current. This happens momentarily, and then the opposition disappears.

When the current through the inductor is interrupted, the inductor creates a voltage that tries to maintain the current flow. It doesn’t let the current stop abruptly—it’s like it's being stubborn, right? That’s why people sometimes call it a “cow temper.”

This behavior of the inductor allows us to use it in various ways. Think about alternating current (AC), which constantly changes direction. We sometimes want to block AC and allow DC to pass. That’s where inductors come in handy. Since DC doesn’t change direction, it flows smoothly through the inductor. However, AC, which changes rapidly, gets blocked. The higher the inductance value, the more it resists fast-changing currents.

By using this property, we can separate AC and DC in a circuit. While capacitors block DC and allow AC, inductors do the opposite—blocking AC and allowing DC. Together, they help filter and manage signals in electronic circuits. Of course, there are many other functions of inductors, and as you learn more, you’ll discover them gradually.

To truly understand inductors, you need to study Faraday’s Law of Electromagnetic Induction.

An inductor is a passive component made by winding insulated wires, such as enameled wire, around a core. It plays a key role in many electronic circuits.

There are two main types of inductance: self-inductance and mutual inductance.

Self-inductance occurs when a changing current in a coil induces a voltage in the same coil. Mutual inductance happens when the magnetic field of one coil affects another nearby coil.

The main function of an inductor is to block AC, allow DC, filter signals, or form resonant circuits with capacitors and resistors. It's also used in boosting or bucking voltages.

Let's look at some examples. In Figure 1, an inductor is used in a power filter circuit for an MP3 player. It helps stabilize the voltage and prevent AC components from affecting the main control circuit. In Figure 2, an inductor is part of a boost circuit that increases the voltage to power LEDs. In Figure 3, inductors are used to block unwanted high-frequency signals and improve sound quality.
