2017 Q3 global OLED screen shipments ranking: Samsung, LG Electronics, and Huiguang
In the third quarter of this year, IHS Markit released its latest report on OLED display shipments, highlighting a significant market growth. The global OLED market reached $3.04 billion during the period, with Samsung, LG Electronics, and Huiguang standing out as top performers.
OLED technology is gaining popularity due to its unique features such as self-illumination, wider viewing angles, vibrant colors, energy efficiency, and the ability to bend. Apple’s iPhone X was one of the first smartphones to adopt OLED displays, which has further fueled demand for flexible screens. As a result, global shipments of flexible OLED panels have hit record highs.
According to the IHS Markit report, the flexible OLED display market surpassed $3 billion for the first time in the third quarter of 2017. This marks a substantial increase from earlier years—$495.8 million in Q1 2016, $1.11 billion in Q1 2017, and over $2 billion in Q2 2017. The upward trend shows strong momentum in the industry.
Samsung remains the dominant player, capturing 96.5% of the market with sales reaching $2.94 billion in the third quarter. LG Electronics came in second with just over $100 million, representing 3.3% of the market. Meanwhile, Hehui Optoelectronics secured the third position with a modest 0.1% share.
Despite Samsung's overwhelming lead, Chinese manufacturers like BOE and Huaxing Optoelectronics are making steady progress in the flexible OLED panel market. However, Samsung has been heavily investing in the sector, allocating 9.8 trillion won ($970 million) in 2016 and increasing it to 14.1 trillion won in 2017. These investments make it difficult for competitors to challenge Samsung’s dominance in the near future.
Looking ahead, as Chinese companies continue to ramp up their investments, China is expected to account for 28% of global OLED production capacity by 2020. This could position China as the second-largest supplier of OLED displays worldwide, signaling a potential shift in the competitive landscape of the industry.
