What level of domestic machine tools do you know in the world?
What level of CNC machine tools does China currently hold on the global stage? How many foreign technologies are actually embedded in those so-called "independent intellectual property" CNC machines? These questions have always been at the heart of the Chinese machine tool industry, and it's hard to say whether they're being addressed effectively or not.
From a broader perspective, the performance of China's machinery industry in the first three quarters of 2017 exceeded expectations. Not only did the growth rate surpass forecasts, but the overall quality of operations also improved. Specifically for the machine tool sector, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, China's machine tool output during this period was 577,100 units of metal-cutting machine tools, up 7.49% year-on-year. Among them, 189,100 were CNC machine tools, representing a modest 0.49% increase. The number of metal-forming machine tools reached 238,400, up 0.69%, with 21,300 being CNC models—an impressive 15.51% rise. Additionally, the production of CNC numerical control devices hit 185,500 units, surging by 33.82%. Meanwhile, cutting tools totaled 7,518 million, increasing by 17.58% compared to the same period last year.
Looking at these figures, the overall health of China's machine tool industry seems promising this year, with faster-than-expected growth in output. However, high production numbers don't always translate into high-quality products or advanced manufacturing capabilities. Therefore, whether we're singing well or poorly, it might be better to set aside the opinions of foreign media and focus on our own progress.

The image above comes from a report by the European Machine Tool Industry Joint Commission (CECIMO) several years ago. It clearly states that the main competitors of the European machine tool industry are Japan and Taiwan. Japan and Europe are considered to be on par, while Chinese machine tools are described as having a cost advantage, with gradually improving technical strength. However, they are not yet seen as major competitors and are still not operating at the same level. Unfortunately, this assessment still holds true today.
In fact, this viewpoint is still widely accepted within the industry. In Japan, Europe, and other regions, machine tool manufacturing is still more advanced than China in terms of technology and development. However, it's also unfair to label the current state of Chinese machine tools as "bad." After all, "having gaps" and "being poor" are two different things.
