Amers Semiconductor Introduces NFC Smart Sensor IC
Ams AG has introduced the AS39513, a groundbreaking NFC sensor tag and data logger IC designed for smart tags that enhance the storage and transportation of food, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare products. This innovative solution offers efficient and precise monitoring throughout the supply chain.
The AS39513 is a fully digital sensor with an integrated NFC front end, making it easy to embed into smart labels. Authorized NFC readers—such as smartphones or tablets—can access the unique ID stored in its internal memory, along with temperature and other critical data, providing real-time insights.
Smart labels based on the AS39513 allow manufacturers, transporters, and retailers to track detailed status information of individual packages during transit. This ensures that perishable goods, like fresh produce, remain intact upon arrival.
The chip offers a complete solution for temperature monitoring and NFC connectivity, including an NFC front end, temperature sensors, and analog interfaces for external sensors. Additional features include a real-time clock, a 10-bit ADC, a configurable data logging engine, a 9kbit password-protected EEPROM, and an SPI interface connected to an external microcontroller. The AS39513 is available in bump die or chip-scale packaging, measuring just 0.3mm in thickness.
Powered by a single-cell (1.5V) or dual-battery (3V) system, the AS39513 can store up to 1,020 time-stamped sensor readings. It complies with ISO15693 and NFC-V (T5T) standards and can be read by NFC-enabled devices within a few centimeters. With a dedicated ISO15693 reader, the range extends to 1–2 meters, enabling simultaneous reading of multiple tags in a refrigerator or cabinet.
This new device replaces the Amers Semiconductor SL13A, offering improved temperature sensor performance and ±0.5°C accuracy in the critical -20°C to 10°C range, with ±1°C accuracy over the extended range from -55°C to 125°C.
The AS39513 integrates a temperature sensor, making it ideal for cold chain monitoring in food, pharmaceuticals, and health products. It also includes the ams Cools Log double-click engine, which allows full control and configuration of the logging mode and timing. Temperature measurements can be triggered periodically, when thresholds are exceeded, or via an external device.
One of the key innovations of the AS39513 is the Cool-Log engine, which provides operational flexibility and low power consumption without requiring a microprocessor. In standby mode, the chip consumes only 2μA, allowing more than a year of continuous temperature logging with a 30mAh battery. This low-power design enables the use of smaller, more cost-effective batteries, opening up new possibilities for disposable, eco-friendly smart labels in the farm-to-table market.
Operating in passive mode, the AS39513 draws energy from the reader’s RF field and can provide up to 4mA (1.8V) of current to external circuitry.
Giancarlo Cutrignelli, head of marketing for Ams’ wireless sensor business, said: “The AS39513 is a fully integrated smart wireless sensor that helps manufacturers, carriers, and retailers verify that medicines, food, and other items are properly stored and transported. It enables supply chain companies to access detailed records of conditions within a single package and make informed decisions about accepting or rejecting shipments.â€
“In addition,†he added, “the use of modern RFID assembly processes and printed batteries helps customers reduce production costs while meeting strict environmental regulations like RoHS, REACH, and EU Directive 2006/66/EC. This makes smart sensor tags truly disposable and eco-friendly.â€
