The social changes driven by robotics are a gradual and non-negligible process

Editor's note: With the continuous development of disruptive new technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchains, and robots, people have also expressed some worries about them. They are worried that there will be fewer job opportunities in the future, and they worry that their jobs will be "Machine" replaced. ErikP.M. Vermeulen shared in this article his five predictions on the question “What will happen to future jobs?”. Technology will replace a part of the work, including physical and mental work, but it will also create part of the work. For us, the most important thing is to realize that this continuous change in the surrounding world, to understand and accept new technologies in order to discover its Unbounded possibilities and opportunities.

What disruptive new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and robotics, will have on our business? In order to keep pace with the development of the digital age, do I need to change my working style? Will my work be replaced by a machine in the future? ...I will lose my job?

Of course, these are not some issues that most people are worried about. We generally do not think that our current job opportunities will soon disappear. However, almost every day I receive some questions related to this, from students, colleagues, and from those who I met in various activities and meetings. It is worth mentioning that no matter how different their nationality, age or life experience, these people are all worried about the role of the digital world. And the reason they feel anxious about this seems to be simple:

The pace of technological change and the determination of all companies in accepting new technologies, including artificial intelligence and automation.

The ever-evolving prophecies of new technologies will be some of the stories and books on how new technologies will transform the way businesses and other organizations operate in our lifetime, such as the book “Homo Deus: ABrief History of Tomorrow”.

Human beings are afraid of the unknown and are afraid that if they fail to fully understand and accept new technologies, they will be left behind.

These people usually ask me about the overall view on this issue. Here I also list five predictions on the question “What will happen to future jobs?”. Of course, this does not include all the content.

#1- "Intelligent machines will change everything"

Robotics and automation technology have had a major impact on physical labor and it is expected that this trend will continue to increase in the near future. Many jobs, including drivers, cashiers, and restaurant workers, for example, will soon be replaced by "machines." An interesting phenomenon is that in countries with a low population and insufficient workforce, the development of intelligent robots is particularly rapid, and Japan is the most obvious example.

But as I mentioned in another article before, the impact of smart machines is not limited to work in specific areas. Knowledge workers will also be affected. Some of the more routine and predictable work can be performed better with machines and algorithms, such as reviewing legal documents, analyzing medical images, and processing certain insurance claims. The scope of alternative work for these machines and algorithms will undoubtedly continue to expand, and smart machines will change everything.

At this level, it is at least necessary for people to care about the question of how they should use their skills in the automation world. We do need to consider these issues and plan and prepare for the digital future.

#2 - "We will live in a 'data driven' world where 'machine and machine' communicate."

In the future, we will see more and more robots communicate and trade with each other. Blockchain technology and smart contracts will only further stimulate this trend. At the same time, we have also seen the significant impact of IoT technologies in multiple industries and areas. For example, IoT applications are very popular among municipal governments. Networked sensors and street lights are considered to collect and analyze data to improve Essential tools for traffic flow, public transport, communications and urban infrastructure.

A large number of cases prove that in this new world of "big data", human experience and investment will no longer be so important. Big data analysis is used to calculate home values, make predictions, and even improve the performance of sports teams and players.

#3 - "The new technology will not replace 'humans, it will 'enhance' the reality."

However, we cannot simply downplay the current technological revolution as an anti-utopian product that leads to unemployment and pressure. Technological innovation has always shaped our future. Regardless of the invention of a light bulb or the appearance of a personal computer, these two “innovation achievements” have profoundly changed the way we live and work. However, we quickly adapted to the changes that they brought along, and now they are also seen as an integral part of human life. Technology enhances our experience.

Although we humans are very good at creating new technologies and then re-adjusting ourselves around this new technology, it is clear that the digital revolution is different because the digital revolution has a shorter innovation cycle and a faster pace of innovation. This means that we often find it difficult to understand and adapt to the speed and scale of the social changes that result. Therefore, it is clear that everyone needs more guidance in order to better understand our ever-changing relationship between humans and technology.

However, I believe there is not much difference between the current digital technology revolution and the invention of light bulbs or personal computers. Because these new technologies are all enhancements to our existing life knowledge, expertise, and skills, they can promote trust and help us complete our work better and faster. In addition, these technologies may help us achieve a more balanced working and living conditions. The most important point is that these new technologies have created a world full of new and diverse opportunities.

#4- "There will be (many) new job opportunities"

The most important point I have observed may be that the digital age will bring us tremendous new jobs and employment opportunities. Here, I said not only that we have more opportunities to start our own business or to join startups that are developing this new technology and bringing it to market. Those large, well-established companies will also provide digital technicians with more and more job opportunities, whether as employees or as consultants.

Such companies are not merely looking for technical personnel. They also need futurists and “millennial generation experts” to help them solve many problems related to the ethics, design, and implementation of new technologies. They can help develop awareness about new products and technology solutions and applications. Perhaps more importantly, they can help realize the humanization of the company's brand and culture. This is a very important point in the era of digitalization and big data.

For other creators, the digital age can also provide them with many opportunities and advantages. They can distribute their work faster through the Internet. New technologies, especially blockchain and smart contracts, provide them with the opportunity to establish more direct relationships with their fans. They can share content directly with fans and get paid without the intervention of "middleman" or "agent."

In this latest digital world, the most important will be those most “humanized” skills, the kind of ability to create, innovate, and give meaning to the world. To be precise, it is also those skills that are the most difficult and difficult to copy, regardless of how "intelligent" the machine is.

#5- "Technologically-driven social change is a gradual, non-negligible process"

The interesting thing for me is that not everyone is aware of the fact that new digital technologies have had a major impact on the job market. People are worried about the possible future effects of the imagination, but they do not know that some changes have taken place now. For example, when I discuss this issue with my colleagues, they are more inclined to explore changes in the “future” job market. They feel like I'm talking about an undergraduate fiction, not current events.

However, we have to bear in mind that the employment market is constantly being changed and subverted due to the development of science and technology. The exponential growth of new technologies has been, and will continue to have a significant impact on the way we work. However, this ongoing gradual incremental process is easily overlooked.

As far as I am concerned, it is very difficult for me to imagine working without a smartphone, a computer and the Internet. It seems impossible to think of a job without these devices. This may sound strange, but the process of being "captured" by new technologies seems to be largely an unconscious process. We are so immersed in the human activities that are possible with this new technology that we have almost never noticed the existence of this technology behind the activity. The wonderful thing about new technology is that it will “hidden” behind and promote new and previously unimaginable activities.

Then, what will happen next?

The development of new digital technologies means that many jobs will disappear, but this should not be the reason why we are desperate. In the same way, it is not a time for complacency. In a digital world, everyone needs to think seriously about the meaning and impact of technology, and how it affects people's work and the way they work. Everyone needs to understand and accept new technologies in order to discover their infinite possibilities and opportunities.

What are the biggest challenges facing companies in the digital era? It should be possible to create an environment and culture that encourages and appreciates the changes brought about by new technologies and the creative responses they need.
