Activated Alumina Technical Specifications

Activated alumina is a white, spherical, porous material with consistent particle size, a smooth surface, and a specific surface area ranging from 5 to 120 m²/g. It is tested using the 3H-2000 series specific surface meter, which offers high accuracy, reproducibility, and is widely recognized both domestically and internationally. The product exhibits strong mechanical strength, excellent hygroscopic properties, and does not swell when absorbing water. It remains in its original state after moisture absorption, is non-toxic, odorless, and insoluble in water or ethanol. It has strong adsorption capabilities for fluoride, making it ideal for defluoridation of drinking water in high-fluoride areas.

Activated alumina also demonstrates selective adsorption for gases, water vapor, and certain liquids. When saturated, it can be regenerated by heating at approximately 175–315°C, allowing multiple cycles of adsorption and regeneration. Beyond its use as a desiccant, it can effectively adsorb lubricating oil vapors from contaminated oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and natural gas. It serves as a catalyst, catalyst carrier, and chromatography analysis support material.

Under optimal operating and regeneration conditions, activated alumina can achieve a drying depth of up to -70°C below the dew point temperature. Its primary applications include removing fluorides from high-fluoride drinking water, defluorination in alkylbenzene production, deacidification of transformer oil, and drying in various industries such as electronics, textiles, and petrochemicals. It can reach a dew point of -40°C in many applications and even -55°C in pressure swing adsorption systems for air separation. This makes it an efficient desiccant for deep drying of trace water, especially suitable for non-thermal regeneration units.

The specific surface area of activated alumina is a critical parameter, measured in m²/g. According to national standards (GB/T 19587-2004), the BET multi-point method is used, which involves measuring nitrogen adsorption at different partial pressures between 5% and 30%. The BET formula calculates the monolayer adsorption capacity, enabling accurate determination of the surface area.
