Bosch recently announced the closure of its subsidiary Akustica in Pittsburgh, USA, scheduled to take place by the end of October 2018. According to reports from Memes Consulting, no suitable buyers or partners were found for the company over the past 10 months, leading to this decision. Akustica, which was acquired by Bosch in August 2009 as a wholly-owned subsidiary, specializes in the development of high-performance analog MEMS microphones.
The shutdown will affect approximately 45 employees at Akustica's headquarters on Smallman Street in Pittsburgh, along with 12 other staff members in related offices. However, Bosch emphasized that the R&D center located in the same building will not be impacted. The company has stated that affected employees will be given the opportunity to apply for other positions within Bosch and will also receive severance packages and assistance in finding new jobs.
Akustica is known for pioneering the development of miniature MEMS microphones, including the world’s first digital MEMS microphone. In December 2016, Bosch began exploring new strategic options for Akustica and hired Angle Advisors, a U.S.-based consulting firm, to evaluate the business. Despite these efforts, Bosch concluded that maintaining Akustica's operations would require significant time and resources, which are better allocated to its core consumer electronics and automotive MEMS product lines.
According to Bosch spokesperson Linda Beckmeyer, "The cost of continuing to develop the next generation of MEMS microphones for Akustica is too high, and we believe it's more efficient to focus on our key areas." She added that the entire production line of Akustica will be phased out in the coming year.
