Based on the layout of the machine tool spindle and its structural characteristics, CNC milling machines can be categorized into vertical, horizontal, and gantry types.
1. CNC Vertical Milling Machine: The majority of current three-axis CNC milling machines fall into this category. The spindle is perpendicular to the worktable, making it easy to clamp and observe the workpiece during processing. However, chip removal can be challenging. Most models use a fixed-column design, with the table stationary and the headstock moving up and down, balanced by internal weights. To maintain rigidity, the distance between the spindle centerline and the column rail surface should not be too large, which makes this structure ideal for medium-sized CNC milling machines. Additionally, there are four- or five-axis vertical CNC milling machines that allow the spindle to rotate around one or two of the XYZ axes. More axes mean more functions, greater machining flexibility, and higher costs, along with increased complexity in programming and system requirements. Some models can be equipped with a CNC rotary table or an automatic tool changer to expand their capabilities and improve efficiency. 2. CNC Horizontal Milling Machine: In these machines, the spindle axis runs parallel to the horizontal plane, making it harder to observe the cutting process. However, chip removal is smoother. To enhance functionality, they often come with a CNC rotary table or universal turntable, enabling four- or five-axis machining. This allows for multi-sided processing without repositioning the workpiece. A universal CNC turntable can position complex angles or spatial surfaces horizontally, eliminating the need for special fixtures or cutters. While simpler models are less common due to cost, most modern horizontal milling machines include an automatic tool changer, transforming them into horizontal machining centers. 3. CNC Gantry Milling Machine: For large-scale CNC milling operations, a symmetrical dual-column structure is typically used to ensure high rigidity and strength. These are known as CNC gantry milling machines and can have either a moving table or a moving gantry. They are ideal for processing large and medium-sized parts, plates, discs, shells, and molds. After a single clamping, the workpieces can be continuously processed through milling, drilling, boring, and reaming. They are widely used in industries such as aerospace, heavy machinery, locomotives, shipbuilding, machine tools, printing, and mold manufacturing. 4. Main Drive System Structure: The main drive system includes the spindle motor, transmission system, and spindle components. Most variable-speed systems use frequency-controlled or AC servo spindle motors, which operate via synchronous tooth profiles. To achieve low-speed, high-torque performance, some machines add one or more gear reductions. In economical CNC milling machines, a standard motor may drive the spindle through V-belts, pulleys, and manual gear shifts. Speed changes are achieved by altering the motor wiring configuration and using manual shifting modes.
