Based on the layout of the machine tool spindle and its structural characteristics, CNC milling machines can be categorized into vertical, horizontal, and gantry types.
1. **CNC Vertical Milling Machine**
The majority of current CNC milling machines are three-axis models. In these machines, the spindle is perpendicular to the worktable. This makes it easier to clamp the workpiece and observe the cutting process, but chip removal can be challenging. Most vertical mills use a fixed column design, where the worktable doesn’t move up or down. Instead, the headstock moves vertically, and the column contains a counterweight to balance the headstock’s weight. To maintain rigidity, the distance between the spindle centerline and the column rail should not be too large, making this structure ideal for medium-sized CNC milling machines.
Additionally, there are four-axis and five-axis vertical milling machines that allow the spindle to rotate around one or two of the XYZ axes. More axes mean more functions, a wider range of machining possibilities, and greater flexibility, but also a more complex structure, higher system requirements, and increased programming difficulty. These machines tend to be more expensive due to their advanced capabilities.
Some vertical CNC mills can be equipped with a CNC rotary table or automatic tool changer, expanding their functionality and processing range while improving efficiency.
2. **CNC Horizontal Milling Machine**
In horizontal milling machines, the spindle axis runs parallel to the horizontal plane, which makes it harder to observe the cutting process. However, chip removal is smoother. To enhance versatility, these machines often come with a CNC rotary table or universal turntable, enabling four-axis or five-axis machining. This allows for side contouring and multi-sided processing without repositioning the workpiece. The universal turntable can position different angled surfaces horizontally, eliminating the need for special fixtures or cutters. While simple horizontal CNC mills are less common now, most are equipped with automatic tool changers, evolving into horizontal machining centers.
3. **CNC Gantry Milling Machine**
For large-scale CNC milling operations, a symmetrical double-column structure is typically used to ensure high rigidity and strength. This type of machine is known as a CNC gantry mill. It comes in two forms: one where the table moves, and another where the gantry moves. These machines are ideal for processing large parts such as plates, discs, shells, and molds. With a single setup, they can perform multiple operations like milling, drilling, boring, and reaming efficiently. They are widely used in industries such as aerospace, heavy machinery, locomotives, shipbuilding, and mold manufacturing.
4. **Main Drive System Structure**
The main drive system includes the spindle motor, transmission mechanism, and spindle assembly. Most modern CNC milling machines use variable frequency or AC servo spindle motors, allowing precise speed control. For low-speed, high-torque applications, gear reductions may be added. In economical CNC mills, standard motors drive the spindle via V-belts, pulleys, and manual gearboxes. Speed changes are achieved by altering the motor wiring or manually shifting gears.
