Google promotes 100% HTML 5 policy in July
As of June 30, 2016, Google AdWords and DoubleClick Digital Marketing will stop accepting new display ads in Flash format. Starting January 2, 2017, all existing Flash-based display ads will no longer be supported on the Display Network and DoubleClick platforms. This move is part of Google’s ongoing effort to improve user experience, especially on mobile devices.
Google has been gradually phasing out Flash for over two years. Last year, they introduced automatic conversion tools to help advertisers transition from Flash to HTML5. Mid-year, Chrome began blocking non-central Flash ads by default. Now, with the new policy, all display ads must be fully compatible with HTML5.
This change means that advertisers need to update their campaigns before the deadline. Google has provided tools and resources to help with the transition. However, video ads are currently unaffected and can still use Flash for now.
Flash has long been criticized for its security vulnerabilities and performance issues. Major browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari have already started phasing it out. YouTube and Facebook have also stopped supporting Flash content. Despite these efforts, security flaws continue to be a concern. Adobe recently patched 22 critical vulnerabilities in Flash Player, while Microsoft included fixes in its latest security updates.
