Value and performance play - Huishibao RK3399 smart TV box evaluation
On the eve of National Day, we were busy preparing for our wedding. Naturally, we visited major shopping malls to choose household appliances such as TVs, refrigerators, and washing machines. When we looked at the TVs, we noticed 4K logos on each one. Taiwanese smart TVs come with built-in Wi-Fi capabilities. It can be said that the development of smart TVs has posed significant challenges to the TV box industry. Nowadays, most service providers offer broadband services along with IPTV and TV boxes. However, in reality, 4K TV boxes equipped with the RK3399 chip are still rare.
While searching online for "TV box" on Baidu, I stumbled upon the "Huishibao RK3399 Smart TV Box" in the results. This time, I had the privilege of applying for the RK3399 model from HDTV, and I was immediately impressed by its powerful configuration. After learning more about it, I called it a "performance monster." It is a fully upgraded, high-end smart TV box that offers excellent functionality.
Let me take you through my experience with this device.

Part 1 – First Impressions
The packaging is sleek and black with gold accents, giving off a high-tech feel. The logo and product model are diagonally placed, and the gold "4K" symbol in the lower right corner indicates support for 4K resolution.
The back of the package is clean and straightforward, though it would have been better if it included manufacturer information or a barcode and QR code.
The top and bottom of the box feature Android robots, suggesting that the TV box supports Android TV.
Interestingly, the outer packaging has a pull-out design, and there's a gold Android TV logo on the side. Inside, we found a black box.
Once opened, the device caught my attention with its elegant design—pure black with a silver trim and a large 4K logo in the center, emphasizing its 4K capabilities. The model number is R99, and the overall look makes me think of the slogan: “You can obviously see the value of the face, depending on your ability.†The box is well-protected with sponge padding.
Inside the package, we found the host, power adapter, remote control (with an IR signal interface), HDMI cable, Type-C cable, product certification, and a quick guide.
The R99 body follows China’s “Tianfangdiyuan†design philosophy—simple yet elegant. It’s made of aluminum alloy, with a matte finish and a bright metal edge. The overall appearance is impressive.
A rubber base is placed in the center to ensure stability, and the cooling holes around the edges help maintain optimal performance during extended use.
The front panel features a power indicator light, which glows blue when powered on.
On the sides, there are slots for TF cards, a Type-C port, and USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports.
At the back, there are a Gigabit Ethernet port, an optical audio port, an HDMI 2.0 port, and a power interface. The variety of ports makes it suitable for different home setups, especially with support for Type-C and optical audio.
The rear also includes an infrared receiver.
The remote control is designed with comfort in mind, featuring a 2.4G wireless connection for 360-degree control. Its oval shape and smooth surface make it easy to grip.
The package includes an HDMI cable, a Type-C cable, and a power cable.
The quick guide helps users get started quickly, explaining how to use this "performance monster."
Compared to other devices, the R99 is more refined and compact. Its seamless design eliminates the need for external antennas, making it modern and sleek.
In terms of connectivity, the R99 supports Type-C, optical audio, and TF card expansion, making it one of the latest-generation devices.
Part 2 – Performance Overview
The standout feature of the R99 is its RK3399 chip, which remains highly powerful even by today’s standards. It uses a Big.Little architecture with two Cortex-A72 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores, totaling six cores. The GPU is Mali-T860 MP4, offering a 45% improvement in performance over the previous generation. It supports DDR3, LPDDR3, and LPDDR4 memory, as well as 4K 10-bit@60fps video decoding via H.264, H.265, and VP9. It also supports HDMI 2.0, USB 3.0, Type-C, and PCIe interfaces. With a configuration of 4GB RAM and 32GB storage, it outperforms many existing models on the market.
In benchmark tests, the R99 scored 19,879 points, which is quite impressive. Its performance is strong enough to rival many high-end TV boxes, making it a top choice for HD content.
Part 3 – User Experience
The R99 boots up quickly, displaying a simple main interface. The UI is user-friendly, with a Win8-style layout and horizontal navigation. It lists key functions like video, music, settings, app management, folder management, and a browser. Third-party apps can be customized as shortcuts.
The video interface allows users to watch live internet TV. High-definition videos were tested, showcasing the R99's ability to handle detailed visuals.
Blu-ray movies like "Bahobaly" and "Fast & Furious" were played without any issues, demonstrating the box’s strong decoding capabilities.
In summary, the R99 is a high-performance smart TV box that supports gigabit wired connections, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and multiple ports including TF, Type-C, USB 2.0, and USB 3.0. With a 6-core 64-bit CPU, 4GB RAM, and 32GB storage, it easily outperforms my current TV box.
For avid TV fans, the R99 allows fast forward, rewind, and jump functions. It also supports games, weather forecasts, news, flight info, stock browsing, and more, enhancing daily life. Future improvements could include voice control for easier access to movies, shows, and variety programs.
