1. Overview

Freescale's feature-rich, networked intelligent gateway reference design is based on the highly flexible, versatile low-power MPC8308 PowerQUICC® II Pro processor that easily supports a wide range of related applications, including energy monitoring and management, home automation control, home security and surveillance , VoIP and HD video streaming.

The MPC8308 Networked Smart Gateway provides access to and control of M2M links from smart handheld devices "anytime, anywhere" through an easy-to-use graphical user interface. Offering comprehensive HAN, WLAN and WAN connectivity, the MPC8308-NSG includes:

An integrated MPC13226 ZigBee® wireless base station, HAN configuration supporting Smart Energy 1.0 and Home AutomaTIon 1.0, and smart plugs and applications.

An integrated 802.11n 2x2 Wi-Fi module that delivers over 300 Mbps WLAN performance

Broadband WAN connectivity via cable, DSL or 3G/4G

The MPC8308- NSG reference design includes a complete set of Freescale's own OpenWrt software, which does not require a license fee. The production kit is based on a compact 4" x 5" four-layer board that includes a low-cost flip-top housing with internal antenna and voltage. The kit includes a fully tested NSG unit, power supply, documentation and cables with a complete schematic, gerber and a free OpenWRT software stack.

Optimized for low cost and low power, the MPC8308 processor provides a highly integrated PowerQUICC® II Pro processor for network applications such as smart grid home energy gateways, data hubs, wireless LAN access points, and wireless homes. Base stations, consumer electronics printing, and industrial applications including industrial control and factory automation. The MPC8308 processor extends the PowerQUICC® II Pro family to deliver higher CPU performance, high-speed peripherals, and low-power operation at a lower cost.

For network applications, Gigabit Ethernet MAC can be connected to a wired network, while PCI Express® and SDIO interfaces can be connected to wireless LAN or 3G and 4G modem devices. The MPC8308 features integrated IEEE® 1588 version 2 time synchronization for extremely accurate clock synchronization for time-sensitive telecom services, industrial network switches, powerline networks, and test/measurement devices.
