Driving at night and in fog is equally safe: Infineon delivers 10 millionth automotive radar chips

Munich, Germany, August 3, 2015 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) announced the delivery of 10 million high-frequency radar chips. This 77 GHz chip is suitable for radar driving assistance systems that recognize objects within a distance of 250 meters. According to Infineon's estimates, in 2014, almost half of the 77 GHz radar systems used in vehicles used Infineon technology.

According to a recent report by market research firm IHS Technology, Infineon is the global leader in the 77 GHz chip market, and 77 GHz is the standard frequency range for radar applications such as adaptive cruise control and collision warning. In the past six years, Infineon's first batch of 10 million high-frequency radar chips are mainly installed in high-end cars and luxury cars. Infineon expects that market demand will continue to grow, and as many as 10 million radar chips will be used in medium and compact cars next year. This means that one out of every twenty vehicles is equipped with a driver assistance system using Infineon's 77 GHz radar chip.

Market research firm Strategy AnalyTIcs also confirmed this trend in automotive safety systems. They expect that the average annual growth rate of applications such as early warning systems and automatic emergency braking will exceed 25% in the next five years. This increase is partly attributable to the rating system of Euro NCAP (European New Car Safety Assessment Association), an independent agency that evaluates the safety of new cars in Europe. To get the highest five-star rating, the new car must be equipped with a radar driver assistance system. Strategy AnalyTIcs predicts that 105 million new cars will be available in 2020, of which more than 20 million will use radar range warning systems. In other words, about 20% of new cars in the world will be equipped with this system.

Jochen Hanebeck, President of Automotive Electronics Division of Infineon Technologies AG, said: "Our chips make driving assistance systems more accurate and cost-effective. Radar driver assistance systems using Infineon chips are now medium and compact. A standard. They are one of Infineon's key growth markets. The rich system knowledge and close cooperation with leading system suppliers and car manufacturers around the world are key to our success."

Broad product portfolio for radar driver assistance systems

Even at low visibility, the 77 GHz radar chip allows the car to “recognize” other road users within a distance of 250 meters. This allows the car to detect dangerous traffic conditions and brake automatically. If radar driver assistance systems continue to be widely adopted, we can avoid terrible crashes in traffic jams – especially during peak travel holidays.

In addition to the 77 GHz radar chip for active safety systems, Infineon offers a 24 GHz radar chip with a range of 100 meters. 24 GHz radar chips are commonly used for blind zone monitoring. The radar system using the chip can alert the driver whether there is a car behind when overtaking or changing lanes. When parking, the radar can detect the traversing vehicles behind the car to prevent collisions.

How car radar works

The vehicle radar system emits radio waves that are reflected back by vehicles or other objects in front. Infineon's radar chips are responsible for transmitting and receiving these high frequency signals and transmitting them to the radar electronic control unit (ECU). The radar ECU measures the distance between the car and other vehicles and their speed to alert the driver at the right time and activate the brakes in an emergency.

"Made in Germany" innovation

Since 2009, Infineon has been developing radar chips at its high-frequency technology innovation center in Regensburg, Germany. Here, the radar chip is integrated into a special chip package and tested. The silicon germanium manufacturing technology invented by Infineon helps to create a more compact and cost-effective radar sensor system.
